{Update} Commit to Get Fit – Week 2

image

One more week is over, so it’s time for another Commit to Get Fit update. How have I done?? Let’s see!

1. WATER
Goal: 64oz of water daily
Actual: I did terrible this week. I only averaged about 22oz daily. My highest single day consumption was just 40oz. Definitely need to improve here.

2. EXERCISE
Goal: Participate in AND complete the new Bikini Body Mommy 6 week challenge.
Actual: SUCCESS! I did all 6 exercises this week!

3. DIET
Goal: At least 5 servings of fruit and vegetables each day and limit my snacks and unhealthy foods.
Actual: Better, but not enough. Still didn’t get my 5 servings of fruit and veggies each day.

4. BALANCE
Goal: Schedule and prioritize my time better.
Actual: I think I did fairly well with this. Of course, I can always improve, but I felt like I had plenty of time for family, exercise, and hobbies this week.

5. SPIRIT:
Goal: Reconnect to church.
Actual: Fail…again. Going to do my best to make this happen this week.

I have lost 0 pounds this week. 25lbs to go until I hit my goal weight.

Are you doing anything to improve your fitness? Physical, mental, emotional, spiritual- they all count! Let me know how you’re doing on your journey so we can root for each other!

{Update} Commit to Get Fit – Week One

Last week, I told you guys I was really going to buckle down and get serious about getting fit!  So, how have I done??  Let’s see!

1. WATER
Goal: 64oz of water daily
Actual: I averaged about 30oz daily. Not great. My best days were Thursday and Sunday, when I drank 48oz. Definitely need to improve here.

2. EXERCISE
Goal: Participate in AND complete the new Bikini Body Mommy 6 week challenge.
Actual: I did all 6 exercises this week! WOO!

3. DIET
Goal: At least 5 servings of fruit and vegetables each day and limit my snacks and unhealthy foods.
Actual: I know I did not get 5 servings of fruit and veggies each day. BUT, I did drink my Ningxia Red almost every day (forgot it twice), so I got some fruit/veggies there plus the antioxidant and essential oil boost! Still, I know I need to do better in this department. I did pretty well with limiting my snacks and unhealthy food. Having water readily available definitely helps with this- especially when I flavor it with my grapefruit essential oil.

4. BALANCE
Goal: Schedule and prioritize my time better.
Actual: I think I did fairly well with this. Of course, I can always improve, but I felt like I had plenty of time for family, exercise, and hobbies this week.

5. SPIRIT:
Goal: Reconnect to church.
Actual: Fail. I had it in my brain that we were going to make it to church yesterday, but I didn’t make it happen. No real excuse other than I didn’t prioritize it high enough. Hoping to do better next week!

And of course, because I need to track progress towards a weight goal… I have lost 0 pounds this week. 25lbs to go until I hit my goal weight.

Are you doing anything to improve your fitness? Physical, mental, emotional, spiritual- they all count! Let me know how you’re doing on your journey so we can root for each other!

{Update} Commit to Get Fit

Longer ago than I care to admit, I publicly declared that I was going to buckle down and get myself back in shape and get healthier.

Yeah….that hasn’t happened yet.

I have no good reason for this. Sure, I have a lot of excuses, but none that are really worth anything. That ends today!

Today I’m starting fresh. I am committing to the following goals:
1. WATER: I WILL drink at least 64oz of water daily, infused with Essential Oils to keep it interesting and my intake up.
2. EXERCISE: I WILL participate in AND complete the new Bikini Body Mommy 6 week challenge.
3. DIET: I WILL make sure to get at least 5 servings of fruit and vegetables each day. I WILL limit my snacks and unhealthy foods.
4. BALANCE: I WILL schedule and prioritize my time better so I have a balance between family, work, exercise, hobbies. Without balance, life can get overwhelming.
5. SPIRIT: I WILL make time to reconnect to church. I often let life get in the way and this area loses its priority status. That needs to stop- I feel more relaxed and together when I make time for my spiritual health.

So there you have it- my goals. I’ll be posting an update each week for the next 6 weeks. By then, hopefully I’ll have developed some healthy habits and will have some progress to show, too!!

Stay tuned and cheer me on!  And I want to hear YOUR health goals so I can cheer you on, too!

Commit to get Fit

Now that I am almost two months post-pregnancy, I think it’s time to really get my act together and start getting myself healthy and fit again. I gained about 30 pounds during my pregnancy (actually not bad weight gain!), and I’ve lost around 20 of those pounds. I haven’t actively done anything to shed the weight; it just came off from birth, breastfeeding, and chasing Ian around the house. But now I’ve hit a plateau, and I really want to push myself over that edge. I was about 15 pounds over my ideal weight when I got pregnant, so I have about 25 pounds I’d like to lose. That’s not going to happen unless I actually make some changes, including incorporating exercise into my daily routine. I’m challenging myself to a 90 day commitment to improve my overall wellness and get active. And here’s how I hope to achieve this:

1) Drink 64oz of water daily
I bought myself a 16oz glass water bottle so I can always have water with me. I will also add 4 drops of Young Living Grapefruit Essential Oil to my water for the first 32oz, and 4 drops of Young Living Lime Essential Oil to my water for the second 32oz. Grapefruit Essential Oil supports healthy digestion, may act as an appetite suppressant, and may help support healthy weight loss. Lime Essential Oil supports weight management and the immune system. Both also taste great! Hopefully having these in my water will encourage me to drink more of it and hit my 64oz goal!

2) Drink 2oz Young Living NingXia Red daily
NingXia Red is an amazing antioxidant drink from Young Living that supports overall health and wellness. I love that you only need 1-2oz a day to feel the full effects of this powerful drink. I’m going to give it an extra boost by adding 1 drop of Young Living Ocotea Essential Oil every day to help curb snacking urges and preserve healthy eating habits.

3) Exercise daily
I’m terrible at motivating myself and doing exercises on my own, so I’ve decided to follow an exercise program. I picked the Bikini Body Mommy 90 day challenge. It’s free, requires very little equipment (just some dumbbells- and even those are optional), comes with videos on YouTube, and is less than 30 minutes a day. Currently the 4th challenge is underway, but I’m going to start with challenge 1.0; then I may move on to 2.0 and beyond if I like the program. I like that this will give me clear expectations and instructions on what I should be doing each day to get active.

4) Watch my diet
I’m not a dieter. It’s just not realistic to think I’ll be able to follow a diet plan. That said, I can at least be more mindful of what I’m eating. I don’t need to be snacking on chips and cookies. I also don’t need to have 3 scoops of ice cream at night- perhaps I can get by with 1.5 scoops instead. Little things that I think I can manage and stick with are going to be key for me.

So why am I putting all this here on my blog? Accountability. I need someone (outside of myself) to know that I’m challenging myself to get my rear in gear. I’ll post my progress and status as I go through this challenge, and I hope maybe some of you will join me, too! Here’s to a healthier me (or us)!

Oiling… One Week In

It’s been about a week since I received my complete Premium Starter Kit (affectionately called PSK from here on out) from Young Living.  Since then I’ve started dipping my toes into the world of Essential Oils, and I’m learning a lot.

One of the things I love most about being part of Young Living (and maybe it’s just the team of folks above me?  But I’d like to think this is reflective of the company as a whole) is the mantra of education over sales.  Sure, there are people who are part of Young Living to make money (it’s a business- why wouldn’t money making be part of the equation?), and that’s not a bad thing… but I love that there are always an abundance of free classes and workshops available, as well as no shortage of people willing to chime in and provide insight on ways to safely use your oils.  It really is a community of people just looking to help out others and there is no pressure to buy anything.  If you simply want to attend a million Facebook classes about oils, and never buy a single thing, you can.  If you want to go to a make-and-take (which generally does have a small fee) and experiment with the products in a low cost/low risk setting, you can.  And if you do eventually decide to make a purchase (whether that’s something retail through a Young Living member/distributor or by signing up for the PSK), you’ll be met with enthusiastic teammates ready to take your hand and lead you along on your oiling journey.  It is a pretty amazing environment, and I’m thrilled to be part of it.

As I mentioned on the blog previously, there were a lot of reasons why I decided to take the plunge and sign up with Young Living.  And now that I have my PSK, how have I been using my oils?  A lot of ways, actually, but one of the first things I did when I got my kit was put my Young Living diffuser to work in an attempt to support Ian’s respiratory system at night to help promote restful sleep.

Young Living diffuser in the PSK

I actually really like the Young Living diffuser that came in the PSK- it’s small, lightweight, and super easy to use (plus, it’s attractive).  I set it up in Ian’s bedroom and added 3 drops of Melaleuca (Tea Tree) Oil, 3 drops of Frankincense, and 2 drops of Lavender.  The Melaleuca and Frankincense were to help support his respiratory system, and the Lavender was to help promote restful sleep.  Ian didn’t seem to notice or mind the scent coming from the diffuser (or if he did, he didn’t complain about it).  I can’t say that I found it to be an extremely pleasant smell, although I certainly didn’t find it unpleasant, but if it had the chance of helping Ian, I was all for it- and since it didn’t bother him, I was OK with it.  I’ve since gotten used to the scent and hardly even notice it when I turn on the diffuser.  It really is quite subtle (or at least, I think it is).  My husband, on the other hand, found the scent to be pretty overwhelming and he was not at all a fan- and even now he still doesn’t like it.  I chalk some of this up to personal preference and some to the fact that he’s even more of an essential oil skeptic than I am.  I’m at least willing to give them a shot (I mean, what do I have to lose? Nothing else has helped this cough).  My husband, on the other hand, is pretty staunchly against oils.  He sees them as just another scheme or a pricey placebo, so we’ll have to see some definite and concrete results before his mindset changes (if it ever does).  But, that’s ok… he’s not stopping me from using them; he’s just not convinced they’ll make a difference.  I can live with that.

Anyway, so far it certainly seems like the diffuser is helping.  The only problem- the diffuser only runs for about 6-8 hours max.  So that means that sometime in the night (generally around 3am), the diffuser would stop and, inevitably, Ian would wake up.  After a few nights of this, I finally decided to just go into his bedroom overnight and refill the diffuser.  But that was really starting to be a pain.  So I set about looking for a longer-running diffuser hoping this might solve the issue.  After endless research and comparing, I decided on this one by Welledia.

Welledia Diffuser

It has a 700mL tank and overall the reviews are very positive.  With my Amazon gift cards (and free Prime shipping), it ended up being hardly any out of pocket cost to me… can’t argue with that!  The new diffuser arrived on Saturday, and I used it that night.  I definitely like the look of the Young Living diffuser better, but MAN this one really does run ALL NIGHT LONG (I’m still trying to get the right amount of water in it so I don’t have a ton left over to dump in the morning).  Since using the new diffuser, Ian has slept all night for most nights!  We are definitely seeing an improvement for him.  Last night, for the first time, I tried Thieves and Lavender in the diffuser, and I also loved that combination.  It’s nice to have options so that I can change things up every now and then if I want (or if an oil is running low). This is another nice thing about Essential Oils- there are generally a number of combinations and choices available.  I’ll definitely be using the new diffuser in his room every night from now on, and in a few weeks, I’ll do another update.  I was just pretty excited about our initial results (and my new long lasting diffuser) that I felt compelled to share.  After all, this was one of my main drivers for taking the Essential Oil plunge, and so far I’m not sorry.

Do you use Essential Oils?  How do you use them?  If you haven’t used them, have you ever given it any thought?  Want to learn more?  We always have Essential Oil Facebook classes going on- and they are open to everyone!

You can reach out to me through a blog comment or email, and I’d be happy to share what I’ve learned so far and any other information about Young Living and Essential Oils. I have a ton of resources at my disposal, and I can always find out the answer to your question if I don’t know it myself.  You can also like my team’s Facebook page (Healthier Oil the Thyme) or visit our team’s website to get more information (as well as tips and recipes for your oils).  Happy oiling!
